Marr is now officially a full-on member of Modest Mouse, Brock recently told us. According to Brock, Marr’s membership is so unequivocal, he will tour with MM in support of their next record, tentatively titled We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank and tentatively due this fall. “He made a cautious commitment to write and record with us, and then the tighter we got, he was like, ‘okay, let’s tour too,’” Brock said. “Then he was pretty much a member of the band - not pretty much. He’s a full blown member of the band. It’s really fuckin’ nice.”

Ian Curtis Movie Begins Shooting

Sure to excite (or enrage) many a disaffected, morose fan, filming for Control, the long-awaited movie about Joy Division's late frontman, Ian Curtis, began this week. Directed by veteran music video director and photographer Anton Corbijn, the film focuses on the tumultuous last years of Curtis' life before he committed suicide in 1980, at the age of 23 and shortly before the band was to depart for its first American tour.

Control deals with Curtis' romantic conflicts with his wife, Deborah, and his mistress, Annik Honore, his increasingly debilitating epileptic seizures, and his performances with Joy Division. Filming will take place in the English towns of Nottingham and Macclesfield (where Curtis lived and is now buried). The film will be released in the UK by Momentum Pictures sometime in 2007.

The film is based upon and expands on the 1995 book Touching From a Distance written by Curtis' widow as a personal account of her life with the singer. Deborah Curtis serves as a co-producer on the film as well, along with Factory Records founder Tony Wilson. Matt Greenhalgh wrote the script for Control, talking to those closest to Curtis, including Honore, who previously remained silent on her relationship with him.

All is well in the land of Interpol.

Although the NYC band seems to have gone through a few rough patches lately, the band has announced that they are currently writing their third album. After breaking up an impressive four times, the band has put their problems behind them, got a dog, contemplated moving to Jersey City and have been writing over the past six months.

On their official website, the band said: "Things are good. Gettin' some rest... gettin' some sun. We did break up - four times - but that's all behind us now. Carlos got a dog. His name is Gaius. Italian greyhound - looks like Carlos. Also, I think I'm moving to Jersey City; because that's where the action is really at. Whoever the people on MySpace are, they're not us.

In all seriousness, we're hard at work on the writing of album three. We've been at it for six months - in case you heard we were on hiatus. We're all very excited about it and think that you will be too. Having yet to record, we can only say that Release will come sometime next year."

New songs in the works include "The Heinrich Maneuver" and "Pawn Shop."

as i was doing some cleaning, i came across this pamphlet i took from the world trade center when i first visited in early '93.
they used to actually let you go on the roof if the weather was right.
look at that white fence, these people are 1,000+ feet off of the ground and they are LEANING on it.
(ever been to the empire state building? it's like a prison cell up there compared to this lol).
for those of you who do not know NYC, the WTC was at the bottom of the island and really required a cab ride if you were coming from anywhere near midtown (where most everything else is). i INSISTED to my friend that i needed to go up in that tower, being an enthusiast of skyscrapers. i remember really looking forward to going up on the roof but the weather was too windy and it was closed. we did take the cab and go, i distinctly remember the elevator we got on, made especially for trips to the 110th floor- "windows to the world". the elevator operator told me to look in the crack between the elevator and the floor to gain perspective of the height. we pressed against the glass, took pictures, and paid $2.50 for a 12oz can of Pepsi.

sometimes i wonder if my friend; who didn't really want to go there and hadn't been there ever, secretly thanks me for insisting.
i do not attribute my desire to go there to anything but my curiousity and interest in skyscrapers.

it is eerie looking at this brochure: the cover shows the 2 towers, and one with people clearly on the roof...

this is a film i just learned about in which 7 directors were given a 30 minute time limit to make a short film about pornography. there are a couple of famous ones (larry clark, gaspar noe) so i was curious. i haven't seen it yet but what i have read about it is utterly shocking and intriguing. click here to read the synopsis.

casting has been announced for the upcoming joy division film, control. newcomer sam riley will play the brilliant-but-doomed singer ian curtis, who committed suicide in 1980 on the eve of the band's first american tour. samantha morton will play curtis' widow, deborah. (it is her book, touching from a distance, on which the screenplay is based.) german actress alexandra maria lara, who just finished filming the new francis ford coppola film youth by youth, will play the singer's lover annik honore. the film will be the first feature from acclaimed photographer and music video director anton corbijn (he has done most of depeche mode's videos). deborah curtis and tony wilson, factory records founder and the subject of 24 hour party people, will both be credited as co-producers. according to nme, new order will re-record some joy division tracks, as well as lay down some new songs, for the soundtrack. the production team hopes to begin shooting in manchester later this year.

death cab for cutie has announced details of their upcoming "directions," an innovative anthology of 12 short films inspired by each song on the band's acclaimed album "plans". every song will be delivered by a different director. 11 of the videos will be unveiled one by one at their website. The first of which will be 'marching bands of manhattan' on january 23. the entire collection will be available on dvd to purchase april 11, 2006. among the filmmakers contributing to "directions" are lance bangs, p.r. brown, ace norton, jeffrey brown, lightborne, autumn de wilde, rob schrab, laurent briet and monkmus, as well as aaron stewart-ahn.

this has been a bad year, in more ways than one.

i first heard of this guy a few weeks ago from a friend who was going to see him in concert. i trusted his judgment but had no immediate desire to check it out, so i made a mental note.

i finally listened to it the other day and i love it. imagine Barrington Levy fronting the Dave Matthews Band and that's my best description.

here's the "hook"- the guy is a white Hasidic Jew (i am talking long curls, hat, and scary quaker costume). BUT- the music won me over, and i am loving it. download this track, and then buy the album.

fans of a 90's live reggae album from Pato Banton (was it called Live & Kickin' All Over America"?) will appreciate.
