Mash-ups ( -- remixes that cleverly craft two songs together -- have been a growing underground phenomenon for years, and are big in the U.K. and the rest of Europe, but now, with the help of MTV, these gems of the DJ world are moving into the national spotlight.
Last summer, as part of its "Ultimate Mash-Ups", MTV put Linkin Park and Jay-Z onstage in Las Vegas, where the two stars did live mash-ups of their music, blending Jay-Z's "Izzo" with Linkin Park's "In the End," for example.
Boosted by the record's success, the network announced that it would produce five more "Ultimate Mash-Ups" specials, and is talking to artists such as Green Day, Ludacris, Kanye West, Coldplay, 50 Cent, the Beastie Boys, Snoop Dogg and Missy Elliot.

I like mash-ups, been appreciating them for years. But let's face it- the reason the Jay-Z- Linkin Park one worked live is that LP kinda has a "rap" part in all their formulaic, angst-ridden, "i hate you because i hate me"-type songs. Coldplay? Green Day? Do you think fans of these bands wanna hear Snoop Dogg rapping on "Clocks" or the Beastie Boys screaming their nursery school rhymes on "When I Come Around"? MTV, as usual, is missing the point. Mash-ups are cool because people with an ear for music figured out 2 completely different songs can have the same time signature. And they point it out (find the Nickelback mash-up where they put 2 of their songs in left and right speakers and it's the SAME fucking song). This is just another silly attempt at marrying hip hop and rock so that MTV can figure out how to serve its audience without being original.
