music hurts

Music Hurts is a new flash-based online magazine. The articles seem fairly more high-concept than "An Interview with Alkaline Trio" or "Good Charlotte Names Their Favorite Albums" (sound like any particular 'zines?).

I would like to see some album reviews on it- maybe there are and I missed them- but a promising start for a digital magazine. This is probably one of the least annoying flash sites I have navigated.

Oh yeah, got another dcfc track today. Sounds good!

denison witmer

OK, I have been writing about a lot of music in the past weeks. Those of you who know me know that I live and breathe it, so it should come as no surprise. Not to mention, the good stuff is finally coming 'round...

Denison Witmer is a singer/songwriter from Philadelphia that I have been enjoying for some time now, I have shared some of his stuff with a few of you out there before. (Thanks for "24 Turned 25", you know who you are.)

His new album "Are You a Dreamer" comes out this Tuesday, and I urge you to check it out. I am listening to it right now and it is good. Mellow, melodic and- well, dreamy.

Sufjan Stevens, members of the Innocence Mission, and members of Ester Drang join him on this album, if that gives you any indicators.

mercury music prize shortlist

OK, I have had trouble picking this every year since they started giving the damn thing out. It's always so unpredictable. Here are the nominees:

Antony & The Johnsons- I certainly like some of their stuff, singer does get on my nerves with the Elvis vibrato thing. Decent chance.

Bloc Party- I really like this band. Every time I find myself checking the XM display to see what band I am listening to, they are on. Very good chance.

Coldplay- Overexposed, been up for it a few times. I think they missed their window. Slight chance.

Hard Fi- no idea who this is.

Kaiser Chiefs- Early mumblings would indicate this band as the clear front-runner, although I do not like them. Very good chance.

KT Tunstall- I think my friend serendipity tried to tell me about this singer and I didn't listen. Don't know about this chance.

Maximo Park- I really like this band as well, definitely got an interpol vibe. Very good chance.

M.I.A.- Currently the new Nelly Furtado, this is the only "urban" sounding thing you will hear on indie rock radio in between the Decemberists and Bright Eyes. I would say based on the unexpected win in 2003 by Dizzee Rascal, this one has a very good chance.

Polar Bear- no idea.

Seth Lakeman- Doesn't this guy play the fiddle or something? And that makes him unique, I guess. No idea.

The Go! Team- This band is very cool, sample-happy like the Avalanches with more of a party vibe. Unfortunately, I don't think they have much of a chance.

The Magic Numbers- I tried getting into them, but not my thing. I don't think they are quite at the level of the others either. Not much of a chance.

We'll see how smart/dumb I look on September 6th! (If anyone remembers by then)

soul meets body

Death Cab for Cutie has put their new single "Soul Meets Body" available for stream on their myspace site. I love the song...a little darker than usual- not a bad thing to my ears. Can't wait for the record.

nada surf- the weight is a gift

Got a hold of the new Nada Surf record, The Weight is a Gift, to be released September 20th here in the US. I had a particular interest in this not only because their last record was so good, but Chris Walla (from DCFC) was on board to help produce. The record is definitely on the mellower side, as I expected, but so far I am not hearing too many hooks. A good listen at this point though.

I will give it some time to gel but wanted to let you fellow 'seekers know it's out there.

(slight return)

Had dinner with some old friends from the "business" tonight.

We re-lived old times, shared old grievances, caught up on times we've missed.

It got me thinking- my whole problem before was being uncomfortable with my role in the whole thing; where I fit in.
But tonight I felt in my element- it is what I know, what I am good at. Maybe it was stepping away for a while that gave me the clarity I so desperately needed.

I was also told how much I have been missed as well (that's a good feeling).

Of course the usual talk about music ensued, and I remembered how much I missed that part of it as well.

Time will tell...

dcfc news

New album, Plans, to be released on August 30th. Tracklisting is as follows:

1. Marching Bands of Manhattan
2. Soul Meets Body
3. Summer Skin
4. Different Names for the Same Thing
5. I Will Follow You into the Dark
6. Your Heart is an Empty Room
7. Someday You Will Be Loved
8. Crooked Teeth
9. What Sarah Said
10. Brothers on a Hotel Bed
11. Stable Song

Some interesting titles there. I am definitely looking forward to hearing tracks 5-7. Track 10 could confirm some suspicions.

In addition, I just got the new Royksopp last night and it is great.

Finally, this year is starting to give us some good music!

sufjan stevens

For those of you unfamiliar with Sufjan Stevens, it is time you checked him out. (His album Greetings From Michigan made it into my 'Best Of' list last year). Come On Feel The Illinoise is his newest, release date was supposed to be today but it ran into a legal issue regarding artwork. Anyways, I obtained the record (!) and listened to it in its entirety tonight.

Sufjan's ambitious (and fairly indulgent) goal is to eventually make a record for each of the 50 states. This is only Number 2, and when I saw the song titles for this one I thought "Oh God, he's gotten full of himself". Can someone really make a beautiful song about John Wayne Gacy? He can, and he did. My advice is to pick up this record. One of the best I have heard so far this year. This guy is on a roll.

sorry-

for the lack of commentary. i know i normally don't say much anyway so i am sure it is not a big deal- in my defense i have been working like a dog. no days off- no holidays, no weekends, no anything.

just part of my plan to get things back on track; bear with me please (i am enduring the difficulties, trust me).
